Date(s): Fri, Jul 30th, 2010

Time: 05:30 pm

100 Days 100 Portraits

Oil on our hands, Oil on our minds, Oil everywhere

What: PHOTO OP – Protest 100th day of BP oil spill

When: Friday, July 30th, 2010, 5:30-7:00

Where: Union Square, 14th Street

The World Can’t Wait issued a call to the public to:

"Come to Union Square and take photos, be photographed covered in 'oil,' use the 'oil' we have on hand to express your anger using your body (or paper and markers provided) as a canvas. Make your own poster there with your own words, speak out publicly. Join us in this happening! Express your outrage! Be creative! Be artistic! We want 100 portraits or more so bring friends. See your photos up on our site later.

Because the oil gusher may not be capped
Because 100-200 million gallons of oil & 2 million of dispersants still foul the Gulf
Because wetlands, shores, wild and marine life are still threatened
Because peoples' health still isn't protected
Because the truth is still not out
Because oil companies and government still want to 'drill, baby, drill'
Because we're not stopping until the well is sealed and the Gulf is healed

Imagine not even being able to go outside of your house without inhaling toxic gasoline-smelling oil fumes?"

From the FAQ section of BP's site:

I live close to the GulfCoast. What will I notice?

The BP oil spill in the Gulf could cause an odor similar to that of a gas station for communities along the affected coast.

Is the odor bad for my health?

This odor may cause symptoms such as headaches or nausea. For your own comfort, limit your exposure to the odor by staying indoors. To the extent possible, close windows and doors, turn your air conditioner on and set to recirculation mode. If you are experiencing severe incidents of nausea or other medical issues, please seek care as soon as possible.
